Help-Portrait / December 8,2012 / Nashville

Oh Mane is in major need of an update... I have been slacking but right now I feel like I've got a lot to share so share I shall.

Life is good... I am getting ready for my first Christmas away from home, which is sad-ish but exciting! I am looking for a job and I feel lucky that I am able to work. I am meeting lots of new people, which means meeting lots of people that I will meet again "for the first time"... before I actually remember their names. And I am getting to know good friends even better.

To keep it short and sweet, I have done lots of things in the past 3 months (woah) that I have never done before, and for that I am grateful. I moved out of Pittsburgh. I traveled to California (Sacramento, LA, Santa Monica, Venice, and Joshua Tree, which was the coolest). I rode the subway in NYC. I went to Philadelphia and Atlanta, both firsts. I am unemployed for the first time in let's see... 8 years. For the first time I am in a new city, making new friends, doing new things and going to new places. It has been a little scary but I have to say that to date, it is the best decision that I have ever made.

With all of that said, I have also been given the opportunity to do something that I have done before. I am super pumped to be participating in my 2nd Help-Portrait event. Only this year I will be in Nashville where HP was actually founded. That's pretty neat! ;)

I feel privileged to know that Help-Portrait exists, and more privileged that I am able to participate in it. I want everyone to know that such a thing exists. It is actually the real reason for this post.

Help-Portrait means giving (refer to previous HP post for more details). One day a year, in cities all over the world, people of all backgrounds come together to offer up what they've got. And what better time to offer it up than the holiday season? A time when some people don't have anything to give at all.

After seeing HP in full swing last year, I feel like I have a better understanding of what it's all about. The idea is so simple. It's not about "taking" a photo, it's about giving one. It's about changing the lives of those less fortunate while it may unexpectedly change yours. It's not about being all, for lack of better words, "Hey look at me, I volunteer so I am automatically a better person." It is simply about seeing the look on someone's face when you hand them a photo. Someone who has NEVER had their photo taken before. Someone who has no assets but now they have a photo. Someone who has never seen herself as "beautiful" but now sees otherwise. Everyone has a story to tell. Help-Portrait gives people a chance to tell their stories and to feel loved. It's all about people loving on people.

If you're telling me that I can change someone's life, heck even just their day, by feeding them lunch, listening to them, maybe putting a little lipgloss on them and giving them their photo, then heck yes, that is something that I want to do.

I was bummed this year that I wouldn't be working at Pittsburgh's Help-Portrait with my dear friend Kevin Lorenzi, who introduced me to HP. Not anymore! I still get to do it!

Seriously peeps, if you can't be there to physically participate, check out www.Help-Portrait.com to donate. Get on youtube and watch some videos that will help your brain cells thrive instead of kill them. I'd be surprised if you didn't tear up... it's good for the soul.

SIDE NOTE: ANYONE can participate in Help-Portrait. You don't have to be a photographer, editor, hair stylist or any of that biz. You can sign up to just plain old help out! Chances are in a city near you, people are already doing it so climb on board.

As I'm getting ready for tomorrow I feel excited! Crazy- last year when the day was done AND I got a good nights sleep, I remember thinking, " When is next years? I can't wait!". Holy crap- it's tomorrow!!! Stay tuned, I can't wait to share my experience!

Between traveling round a bit lastly. Well... Been traveling to Nashville a bit lately. It's ironic yet bitter sweet. Ironic because I've been convinced that I would move here since the day I hit puberty. I knew nothing of this place other than its not new York and its not la, but it might be a nice in-between. Which is funny because I hadn't been to either of those places. What the heck did I know? And bitter sweet because I am actually going to do it. All of my iggnorant notions are paying off. I am ready for something bigger. Bigger than myself and bigger than anything that I've done before. I lived under one roof for 19 years. I managed to escape and move to the city, where I have stayed in one neighborhood. That was a big accomplishment for a suburban girl. I have accomplished a lot in my 22 years and 3 days. Those 3 days are important because on the third day, today, I made yet another trip to this place I will soon call home. Now that the challenge has subsided, I am ready to seek more. Only my close friends are aware of the moves I am about to make. Some have asked if it has to do with my boyfriend. I have to bite my tongue for now because nobody really knows. But I must admit..... Hell Yeah it does. He is a huge part of it and the urgency. We played it down a bit at first. I think to protect ourselves. My career and my dream - to do freelance hair styling - awaits me in Nashville Tennessee. And I will be in good company. If you don't hear from me for a while, know its because something really big is in the works.

do you think I should get bangs?

#ithinkimgonnagetbangs

retro wavesOut with the old in with the new [new]! Once again, retro and vintage inspired looks, with a twist, will be making a comeback, and we can’t get enough! This spring, volumous blowouts will be high in demand. The more body, the better (it’s true). The best part about more body is you can sleep on it and still have body in the morning, thus it’s longer lasting. Come see us so we can teach you how to achieve this look at home.

twist and shout yall
We will always have a place in our hearts for braids, but twists are it in 2012. All of you non-braiders will be jumping with joy when you find out how easy this trend is to DIY. Just choose you section, twist [and pin].

get juicy Your bad hair days are over! Combo these awesome hair cuffs with a twist or braid, and you’re all set. The ponytail cuffs are a no brainer, and ageless. With a little dry shampoo and one of these, everyone will be too interested in your great taste to be concerned with your ponytail! I love the few that Free People carries, like the one pictured. But you can find them popping up everywhere, or even try making your own. Wrap a strap of leather, twine, or ribbon around your hair band to add some excitement. I also love the new turban headbands. Perfect for a long day after work or post workout!

chilly days hair trends

I must say all of these styles can be very low maintenance which is what we all want during these cold months, well actually, all year! We want you to embrace the hair texture that you have been given and just roll with it! Also, check out my fashion tips to stay warm! Accessories i.e. hats, scarves, and jewelry are always a great way to compliment any hairstyle. Consider your hairstyle "a part of your outfit.

the Voluminous Pixie

*For hair with natural body and wave

*Volume, volume, volume!
*For the funky and daring
*For those who like low maintenance do's
*Think Ginnifer Goodwin (pictured) or Rhianna
*Styling tip: Douse your hair in Bb Thickening Hairspray then use Bb's Curl Conscious Holding Foam layered with Bb Texture; finger dry. For 2nd day style you can primp up your curls with Bb Reactivating mist

Fashion tip: Rock any kind of hat. Slouchy beanie caps are in, and when you take it off, your hair won't be messed up!

the Chic Crop
 *For more smooth styles
*A cool new play on the classic pixie (we like lots of fringe)
*Retro is the new black! This cut has lots of versatility; go sleek and smooth with a pompadour, or sassy and sexy with finger waves
*Styling tip: for a slick look, blow dry damp hair in the direction you want it to go with Bb Thickening hairspray and Bb Gel. For a fancy finger wave, come see your stylist to give you a couple tricks!

Fashion Tip: Earmuffs! Or if you walk or ride the bus to work, try large headphones to cover your ears.

the Shaggy bob

*For hair above the shoulder, straight or wavy

* Think Dianna Agron of Glee! I just want to say Dianna should be inspiration to us all because the woman has had every hairstyle under the sun and she looks amazing!!
* Dimension is a must with this haircut! A little bit of balayaging can totally change up this look
* Styling tip: Cocktail Bb Grooming Crème and Bb Texture for softer, sexy locks

Fashion tip: Layer 2 different colored/patterned scarves and when you get to this office, just take one off!

 Classic Long Layers

* For long to middle length hair, of almost any texture
* For the long hair lover; try growing out your short layers for a long layered look
* This is that Kardashian, Victoria's Secret, Cat Deely (pictured) long, flowy, romantic hair that we all love!
*Styling tips: Let your hair do whatever it wants! The more texture, the better! Use Bb Surf Spray layered with Bb Texture, and diffuse if you're in a hurry!
*If you are looking for something more tame, round brush smooth with Bb Straight and Bb Thickening spray. If you're not a round brush kind of girl, I would suggest using a large barrel curling iron (1 inch- 1 ¾ inch depending on the length of your hair).

Fashion tip: Get yourself a hood scarf (a scarf with a hood attached). Keep your hair tucked in that way you won't feel so bulky and you can avoid the wind.

the "Lob" aka Long Bob
* Modern with a retro shape

* Great for someone growing out a short haircut
* For someone who prefers long hair and doesn't want to lose too much length
* Can be worn smooth and sleek at the office, flirty and wavy for a night out, with or without bangs
* Think Tyra Banks (pictured) or Anna Faris
* Styling tips: Blow dry smooth with Bb Grooming Crème and flat iron, turning the hair under towards your face. For flirty, finger dry with Bb Grooming Crème and Bb Texture, then go through with your curling iron and loosely curl random pieces to polish it off!

Fashion tip: Wear what I like to call a necktie, you may know it as an infinity scarf. They are effortless and come in many different fabrics so you can dress it up or down.
